CBD 101

Explore common questions about hemp, our products, and their use.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a particular cannabinoid, a chemical compound, that comes from various strains of hemp and cannabis. With roughly 110 compounds in the hemp and cannabis plants, CBD and THC are the most popular. CBD is a mainstream buzzword and as a single compound is snake oil. The real magic is in the whole hemp plant and all of the compounds and nutrients synergistically working together. We believe in the highest quality hemp products and the only way to achieve that is by using the whole plant.

What is the difference between hemp and cannabis? The only difference between hemp and cannabis is hemp has below 0.3% THC and cannabis has above 0.3% THC. THC is the compound that could be intoxicating. Essentially the two plants are almost identical. There are various hemp and cannabis strains that have been bred with one another for a variety of uses. There are hemp strains that have been developed for industrial purposes and there are hemp strains that have been developed for therapeutic purposes. Ruby Farms’ proprietary hemp strains have been bred through multiple generations and selected for unique plant expressions and specific purposes.

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are the compounds that provide flavor and aroma in not just hemp and cannabis varieties but other plants such as lemons, lavender, and pine trees. We believe terpenes are the most influential compounds in hemp and cannabis varieties. They determine how you feel and the therapeutic benefits one receives. Although CBD and THC are the most well-known compounds, terpenes are the catalyst and deserve greater notoriety. Many so-called “CBD products” and “cannabis products” have synthetic terpenes included in their formula. Ruby Farms only uses terpenes from the whole plant.

How should CBD make me feel?

Hemp (CBD) is NOT intoxicating. Depending on which strain it is derived from, broad-spectrum hemp products should make you feel calm, balanced, focused and energetic, or ready for a blissful sleep. Again, it depends on the combination of terpenes and other compounds in the plant.

We amplify the desired effects by mixing our broad-spectrum hemp (CBD) extract with other complementary herbs that have specific use cases. This further promotes a balanced, sustainable, and healthy lifestyle.

We believe high-quality hemp products can be used by everyone in their everyday lives to treat and prevent a wide variety of ailments.

What is the right dosage?

The right dosage depends on a number of factors (like weight and the severity of the issue), but ultimately it depends on you and your needs. Each Ruby Remedies product comes with recommended doses. Beyond that we suggest you start small and slow, adding more as needed.

What is broad-spectrum hemp/CBD extract?

Quality broad-spectrum hemp (CBD) extract comes from the whole plant. You are getting 100+ compounds and all of the plant’s nutritional value and cannabinoids minus THC. CBD and THC are only two compounds out of roughly a hundred compounds. Whole plant broad-spectrum extracts result in the entourage effect where the various cannabinoids work together to amplify each other. Our USDA certified organic hemp plants are full-spectrum meaning they have a THC content of 0.3% or lower. From those full-spectrum whole plants, our oil is then crafted and infused to our various hemp (CBD) products.

What is CBD isolate? Is it "snake oil"

CBD isolate is nothing but CBD, no other cannabinoids or compounds. This means you miss out on the entourage effect where various cannabinoids complement and amplify each other’s efficacy. CBD isolate is lacking, and only sounds appealing when someone is uninformed or misled. If you want your CBD to do its best, you want full-spectrum flower or broad-spectrum extract.

How does CBD interact with our bodies?

Our bodies have endocannabinoid systems that allow cannabinoids to interact with the human body and affect us. In fact, we have endocannabinoid receptors running throughout our bodies — all over the place, in every nook and cranny. E.g., we have endocannabinoid receptors in our skin, immune cells, bone, fat tissue, liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, heart, blood vessels, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract. Its omnipresence is what makes it so instrumental in preserving homeostasis in the human body.

The body’s endocannabinoid system not only helps us function, but it also allows this curious and fantastic plant’s chemical compounds to ignite sparks inside of us.

And something we find particularly special is that the endocannabinoid system can be found in vertebrates and invertebrates at large. We believe this is a simple sign of just how inextricably linked aspects of nature are. Specifically, living things and the healing herbs we call hemp and cannabis.
